District 35 Caucus - Coming April 14th

Please join us for the District 35 Caucus and to help us plan, please take a short survey.

Date:
Saturday, April 14th

Time:
10:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Place:
Kachemak Bay Campus of the Kenai Peninsula College, 533 E Pioneer Ave., Homer

We will be:

  • Selecting our choice of candidate for the Presidency to run against the job-destroying Republican candidate.
  • Electing Delegates to represent District 35 at the Alaska Democrats Convention in Fairbanks on May 11th - 13th.
  • Electing District representatives to serve on several Alaska Democrats committees
  • Nominating candidates for Alaska Democrats officer positions.
  • Nominating Delegates to represent Alaska at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina September 3rd to the 6th (remember Liz Villareal in 2008?)
  • Debating and voting on Resolutions and changes to the Alaska Democrats Platform and Party Plan.
  • Electing officers for the new District 30 (several of the current officers will not be running re-election) - this is tentative since it depends on court approval of the new District boundaries.

To help us plan, please take a short survey.

30 Is The New 35

The Alaska Redistricting Board has drawn new District boundaries - We are now in House District 30

Effective June 13th, the 5-member Alaska Redistricting Board has shuffled the District boundaries to account for the 2010 Census results. Barring law suits that change the outcome, the area between Homer and Kasilof has be designated House District 30 and Seward, Seldovia, Nanwalek, and Port Graham have been moved to the new District 35 along with Kodiak and Southeast. The map below shows the new boundaries for District 30.

The results of the D35 Caucus will be posted here.

Who is bad for jobs?

  • Unemployment UP 62% under Republican Presidents
  • Unemployment DOWN 34% under Democratic Presidents

Unemployment has gone UP under Republicans and DOWN under Democrats. In particular, on average:

Party At Start At End Change
Republicans 4.6% 6.7% +62%
Democrats 7.3% 4.8% -34%

So, the notion that social responsibility is bad for the economy is a lie and just plain wrong!  This is based on data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics

District 35 Gives Back to our Communities

The Alaska Democratic Party and District 35 Democrats recently made donations to organizations that help our communities.  Donations were made to:

  • The Homer Foundation for its well-known work on the lower Kenai Peninsula including Homer, Anchor Point, Seldovia, Nanwalek, and Port Graham

  • He Will Provide Food Pantry  for helping communities on the Eastern Peninsula that includes Seward, Moose Pass, and Bear Creek.

Past recipients include Homer's Haven House and other organizations.  In the future the entire membership will be polled beginning in June.

Don Young Scorecard;

4/7/11 - Medicare - Young votes to make it more expensive for seniors, but it does reduce taxes for the rich. check out Paul Krugman's take on it.

5/3/11 - Legal Fund - Young gets $60,000 from a Louisiana family for his 'legal defense' - guess we're sharing him with some cajuns. See TPMMuckraker

5/4/11 - Women's Rights - Young voted in favor of a bill that could re-define rape and make a woman prove forcible rape or incest to IRS agents. See Mother Jones
